An Introduction to Our Malazan Read Along
I am hosting a read-along for Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen epic fantasy series at The Fantasy Review! There aren’t many books I read where I feel there is a lot to talk about, but with Malazan the discussions could be endless.
The format for this Malazan read-along is simple. I will write an essay on each chapter of the books as I go along. There will be a brief summary of events and then I will go straight into the literary side of it.
It Starts Now!
The Malazan Read-Along has begun, but there is plenty of time for new readers to catch up. As of 26/03/2021, we are reading Gardens of the Moon and I am working on an analysis of Chapter 1.
My Gardens of the Moon Prologue Analysis is already up so take a look at that once you’ve got to that point.

One of the main things I miss about studying English Literature and Creative Writing at university is the discussions with others who find this stuff interesting! I would love to start a discussion going in the comment sections with Malazan veterans and newbies too.
I have read Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice and am 70% into House of Chains. I have read Gardens of the Moon twice and I’m excited to look at it a third time with my analytical brain on. Looks like my MA will come in useful after all! (See a list of all my previous Malazan posts below).
I would love to hear from anyone interested in joining this Malazan read-along and I look forward to sharing my thoughts and discussing them with you.
Help to create a community on Discord for the read-along!
I have also set up an email sign up for the site (see below) if you want to keep updated with my progress!

Hey, I’d love to join the read-along as a first-time reader of the Malazan books. When are you starting? Is there a group where everyone can discuss the books as they read? ::)
Hi! Thanks for reminding me – I’m going to set up a discord for this! The read-along has started but as I’m analysing chapter by chapter, anyone will soon catch up!
Hi again! Here is a Discord invite for you of you would like to join! https://discord.gg/ntc5kRZhSv
