The Fantasy Review‘s Spoiler-Free Review of The Menu (2022).
Rating: 4/5
The Menu (2022) is a fun, genuinely creepy, and interesting horror movie. It’s not all that scary or disturbing, but it is weird and will have you on the edge of your seat throughout.
Nicholas Hoult, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Ralph Feinnes are fantastic in this movie, as is the rest of the cast. Feinnes’s character, Chef Slowik is a calm, calculated villain, and the performance was a joy to watch.
The plot of The Menu is full of mysteries, and with every reveal I became more invested in finding out more. It is such a great premise that is executed as well as it could have been.
The gore is minimal, with the camera panning away at some of the more gruesome moments. This is a great stylistic choice for the tone and atmosphere of the movie, ensuring that we are shocked just enough at the key moments, and kept guessing at what twists are to come next.
There isn’t much spoiler-free stuff to say about The Menu as it’s such a simple, self-contained premise. It’s a beautifully shot movie with great characters and an engaging plot – definitely well worth checking out.
