The Fantasy Review‘s Spoiler-Free Review of Freaky (2020).
Rating: 4/5
Freaky (2020) is a great example of a hilarious premise executed well by a great cast and fun plot. Great kills, some poignant, emotional moments, and a creepy villain – Freaky is a brilliant slasher comedy movie!
Positives
Sometimes a movie has a great premise but it is poorly executed (The Purge, for example), but Freaky was almost perfect! I loved this body-swap plot and think we got all we could get out of the idea.
The opening scenes were absolutely brilliant and will have you glued to the screen for the rest of the movie. Some of those kills will become iconic in the future, I’m sure of it! They both made me laugh and grossed me out – perfect!
Vince Vaughn manages to be super creepy as a psychopathic murderer, and hilarious as a teenage girl. The way he acted alone and with interactions with his (the teenage girl’s) friends and family really sold the weird plot.
Negatives
I don’t really have any negatives for this movies because it was just so much fun and I didn’t hate any of it. Maybe there could have been a few more kills throughout, but the ones we did get were varied, gory, and very funny.
The very end scene seemed a little redundant, but at the end of the day it didn’t ruin the movie, even if it didn’t add much either.
Conclusion
Overall, if you’re after a fun slasher with plenty of injokes about the genre and lots of funny moments, you’ll love Freaky. Perfect for fans of the Scream franchise and those kinds of movies.
