The Fantasy Review’s review of Heart Eyes (2025).
I didn’t know what I’d been missing all these years. There was a part of my soul in need of sustenance, but had never been satiated. Until Heart Eyes.
Yes, I needed a rom-com-slasher.
Spoiler-Free Review of Heart Eyes (2025)
I’ve watched a lot of “comedy” horror movies recently, like Happy Death Day, and Totally Killer, but there is something special about Heart Eyes.
This movie is essentially a rom-com about people who work in marketing. They go out for a non-date-date and get hunted by a killer who murders romantic couples every Valentine’s Day.
It’s a fun, silly premise, that is held together by strong characterisation, great performances all round, and a rom-com plot that is executed well, despite all the murder.
Oh, and since Scream 5 & 6, Mason Gooding has quickly become an actor I will watch in absolutely anything. I believe I first saw him in Love, Victor as the nice-bad-boy-jock, but the more horror movies we put him in, the better.
The mystery of who the killer was didn’t really interest me. There is a Scream-like reveal which I enjoyed, but it wasn’t that satisfying.
Honestly, the mystery was unimportant. What kept me hooked was the great performances, fast pacing, and plenty of murder to soothe the soul.
If this became a franchise of movies that continued to decline in quality as quantity increased, I’d watch every single one, and I’d be happy about it.
