The Hero of Ages Book Review – Spoiler Free
The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson has to be the best final book of a fantasy series I have ever read. I will admit that it was a little irritating being given loads of clues as the reader but having to wait for ages while the characters worked it out.
I don’t mind that a little, but it was done a lot. The ending was worth it though.
Vin has developed so much! In The Final Empire she went from street urchin to mildly powerful hero. Then in The Well of Ascension she became something more.
In The Hero of Ages, Vin became something even more and it was so good to read! I loved her character development and I wish more books had characters like her.
Elend really came into his own in this one. In book 2 he was struggling a lot with between doing what he believed to be the right thing and doing what had to be done.
In this book there was none of that – just duty. He was a character that grew on me, rather than someone I loved from the very beginning.
Sazed quickly became one of my favourite characters in book 2. In The Hero of Ages, he was difficult to read a lot of the time, but after a while I realised that this is what Brandon Sanderson wanted to achieve.
His character is depressed, so his chapters are going to be slower. His progression and finale were incredible – such an amazing ending!
Overall, this book was incredible – this trilogy was incredible – and I think it should be required reading for all fantasy fans.
This trilogy has brought classic fantasy back into the mainstream – grimdark might be popular right now, but this stuff is timeless. Brandon Sanderson modernised the fairy-tale-like fantasy and it’s incredible.
