The Wise Man’s Fear Book Review – Spoiler Free

For the first time in my life, I read this book by Patrick Rothfuss like I was enjoying a large meal. The Wise Man’s Fear was an all-day buffet where I had all the time in the world to eat everything that was put out.

Nothing would ever go cold or stale and I could just sit back and relax while my stomach settled enough for me to fill up my plate again.

What I mean to say is, I loved reading this epic fantasy book slowly. I enjoyed it just as much as The Name of the Wind.

I will begin, however, with a negative

Denna is worse in this one. Thankfully, we see less of her as Kvothe is off doing his hero stuff for a lot of The Wise Man’s Fear, but any scenes with Denna are wasted pages.

Either Patrick Rothfuss knows this and wants us to hate her, or he’s clueless. If Denna was removed from the story, it would not be affected.

Kvothe’s time at the university is as fun as ever. I love watched him learn and interact with his friends. This beginning section of the book does feel a little slow but it’s still enjoyable to read.

Moving on to Kvothe finally leaving the university

I won’t get into any spoilers, but it’s fair to say that he goes on a journey that befits a standalone story. The ending is a little rushed which was unfortunate because the section where he is learning incredibly new things was my favourite.

Final Thoughts

It is difficult not to go into any spoilers so I will end my review by saying this:

Patrick Rothfuss’ writing style does not slump
Kvothe is as Mary Sue as ever and I don’t care because it’s fun for his character and the story
The world is revealed even more and it’s surprisingly complex and intricate
And there are so many questions!!! (On the questions, don’t expect many answers to old questions, but do also expect new unanswered questions too!)

I will write a spoiler-filled The Wise Man’s Fear book review and exploration of what happened in this book in the near future! It’s about time I joined the long line of those anxiously awaiting the next book!
