We Don’t Need a Third Season of Shadow and Bone - The Fantasy Review

We Don’t Need a Third Season of Shadow and Bone

Here is Why I Think We Don’t Need a Third Season of Shadow and Bone.

I recently finished watching both seasons of Shadow and Bone on Netflix and absolutely loved it. It has everything you could want from a fantasy series; great characters, exciting plots, and incredible visuals.

The only thing I didn’t like was the last few minutes of season 2 (no spoilers, don’t worry!). They are clearly setting up a future story for season 3 (which has not been confirmed, to my knowledge). This would be okay if it continued the themes of the story so far, but I don’t think it would.

Over the two seasons, we get an epic story, a clash between good and evil. That’s basically what Shadow and Bone is at its heart. That main clash has an ending, so why continue making stories?

That’s not to say I don’t want to see more of these characters and this world. There is definitely scope for more – but not as a third season of Shadow and Bone

There is already a potential spin-off in the works, which is exciting, and I think that is the way to go when continuing to adapt Leigh Bardugo’s work.

Now, I haven’t read the books, but I believe Shadow and Bone has already covered the trilogy of the same name, plus some story from the Six of Crows duology. If I was going to make any suggestions, I would say two spin-offs could be the way to go.

The first is the one they have in the works (it’s still “potential”, I believe), and that one more about the Crows. That sounds like an awesome idea – we definitely need to see more of these people as their stories have only been slightly touched upon.

The second spin-off could be the continuation of our main character, Alina Starkov. At the end of season 2, she has a lot of work to do. This show would be more like House of the Dragon instead of Game of Thrones, though. With such a huge shift in themes and story, we need a new name; an official split from Shadow and Bone.

Now, I might be completely wrong, as I have not read the books. But I am currently halfway into book 1, Shadow and Bone, and aim to read everything as I got very invested in all these characters! Perhaps, after, I will change my mind.

If you think I am missing something, or have different views on this, let me know in the comments!
