The Fantasy Review’s Spoiler-Free Review of Holly by Stephen King.
Over the past few years Stephen King has undoubtedly become one of my favourite crime writers, first with the Bill Hodges Trilogy, and now with one of the best side-characters of those books, Holly, we have the latest crime novel from Stephen King and it blew me away!
I burned through Holly by Stephen King, reading it over two days where I refused to put it down! I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, though devoid of the supernatural, as having humans as the “evil” is always a fascinating theme; this is explored through the disturbing serial killings Holly investigates.
Holly as a character was always great, but King goes into even more depth and shows us why he’s been so obsessed with her, to the point of giving her her own book! His character work continues to be outstanding, along with his use of language, improving once again upon his previous works.
If you are looking for a classic horror novel with some supernatural happenings, you won’t find that here. However, I think Holly is a book all Stephen King fans will enjoy, with his fantastic dialogue, character work, and engaging plot. The ending is even good in this one! It’s satisfying and wrapped up well.
