The Fantasy Review‘s Consider Phlebas Special Edition Reviewed – The Folio Society.
The Folio Society sent me a copy of their Consider Phlebas special edition and it is absolutely amazing! I’m not sure they do any bad editions of books…
Anyway, this edition of the first of Iain M. Banks’s Culture novels is gorgeous, with bold and intriguing artwork by Dániel Taylor throughout. These images really make this world feel EPIC (yes, in all-CAPs!), from grand landscapes to spaceships in orbit around a planet. These illustrations are the highlight of this Consider Phlebas special edition.
The cover is very simple in design and I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it has grown on me. I kind of like the orange and blue colour scheme, something which is continued throughout to one degree or another. The book comes with a protective slipcase, which is the same blue as the cover, which is always appreciated when you have a book this precious!
As I have said in previous reviews of The Folio Society’s special editions, the page quality is just outstanding. They must be the most satisfying books to read, with the thickness of a GCSE textbook, but with the texture of a paperback novel. These guys really know how to craft a book!
Overall, I think if you love the Culture series by Iain M. Banks as much as I do, this Consider Phlebas special edition would be a perfect addition to your collection. I would love to see some more books from this series made into special editions in the future!
