Among the bearers of the Rings of Power is Galadriel, one of the most prominent Elven characters in Tolkien’s legendarium. In this article we explore which Ring of Power Galadriel possesses and its significance in the story.
Check out: A Brief History of Galadriel.
Galadriel’s Ring of Power
Galadriel wears Nenya (Quenya for Water–), also known as the Ring of Water or the Ring of Adamant.
Nenya is one of the three Elven Rings of Power, which were forged by the Noldorin-smiths of Eregion under the guidance of Celebrimbor. Sauron was not there for the crafting of the three Elven Rings of Power, but by using the One Ring, he knew when the three were being worn and used.
Characteristics of Nenya
- Nenya was made of mithril with a white stone with a soft, flickering light
- It was associated with the element of water
- It possessed the power of preservation and protection
Significance in the Story
Galadriel was given Nenya at its making. She uses the ring to maintain and protect the realm of Lothlórien throughout the Second and Third Ages, keeping it hidden from the eyes of Sauron and preserving its timelessness.
Because of her power, Galadriel was able to keep her mind closed to Sauron but see into his when wearing the ring. Nenya’s power additionally contributed to the otherworldly and enchanting nature of the Golden Wood.
Fate of Nenya
At the end of the Third Age, with the destruction of the One Ring, the power of all the Rings of Power, including Nenya, faded. Galadriel, along with the other Ring-bearers, left Middle-earth for the Undying Lands, taking Nenya with her.
