Spoiler-free review of Kiss of the Basilisk by Lindsay Straube.
I got brave, alright? It was premature and totally irresponsible, but I figured, hey, what the hell – let’s lose my monster smut virginity.
Apparently reading five or six romantacy books with some spicy scenes was enough preparation for what (and who) was to come…
I think not, you moron.
Kiss of the Basilisk by Lindsay Straube (previously an indie book called Split or Swallow before being picked up by traditional publishers) is a book best going into blind. So I did.
I listened to the two-second Reels that said “READ THIS – DON’T READ REVIEWS” and they were right.
Is Kiss of the Basilisk a book with an exciting plot, great characters, and incredible worldbuilding? Naaaaah nah-nah-nah-nah. Nope.
Nearly half the chapters are the FMC getting hot and heavy, and fair play to her. Have your fun. Life has sucked so far, so make the most of the opportunities you run into.
But, damn did it get weird fast. Like, weird, and fast.
If you enjoyed this, I am not here to shame you. It was hot. I can’t lie. Straube knows how to write people getting down to business, and I read this big book in less than fourty-eight hours.
I didn’t hate it.
Know absolutely nothing going into the book meant I got to experience every single surprise as a real surprise – I didn’t know the tropes, or the premise, or anything at all.
So, I was hooked on knowing what the hell this book was about, while being very surprised that this is erotica not romantacy, and it’s insane.
This is a very confusing review of Kiss of the Basilisk. I know. I think everyone (who is fine with these triggers) should experience this book.
Let your hair down, run a warm bath, and bask in some monster smut before bedtime. Why not?
It was fun. The FMC is a bit marmite judging by reviews, but I thought she was alright – knew what she wanted and took it.
The plot exists, and so does the fantasy world, but I promise you will be given so little time to think about that that you won’t care.
Please tell me if you want a spoiler-filled deep-dive, or if I should read the next book (yes, somehow there is more?), or if there are any other books you want my reaction to!
