The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson: Book Review

My Review

My Rating: 5/5

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson is the best sequel I have ever read – and this is especially surprising considering it is the middle book of a trilogy.

The political intrigue was great – I love a fantasy book with a large amount of politics. Much like A Song of Ice and Fire, we watch the inner squabblings of lords and rulers whilst knowing there is something much bigger – a far greater threat – somewhere on the horizon, so there is a huge amount of tension throughout the book.

Vin’s character vastly improved, becoming stronger, less naive, and beginning to trust. The development of her character is great and I’m looking forward to seeing where she goes next in The Hero of Ages.

Elend became a character. In the first book, The Final Empire, Elend Venture was just the bookworm lordling who we knew might be important but I didn’t care about him at all. In this book, he became human and his love for both Vin and his people is inspiring.

It was the last chapters of The Well of Ascension that had me on edge. Don’t get me wrong, the battle was incredible and I love Brandon Sanderson’s fight scenes; they feel like you’re watching them in a film.

But the final few chapters were where I went, “here we go! Oh, something bad is going to happen – no, something good – no, something bad…” I just couldn’t put The Well of Ascension down at this point and was amazed at the intensity of it all.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt so drawn in by a book before – there was just no looking away!

Overall, The Well of Ascension was incredible and I cried. It may not be a profound conclusion to a book review, but it’s true.
