The Fantasy Review‘s Spoiler-Free Review of Bride of Chucky (1998).
Rating: 3/5
Bride of Chucky (1998) was a pretty good comeback for the franchise after the disappointment of Child’s Play 3 (1991). It leans more into the comedic side of the franchise than the previous movies, and introduces Tiffany Valentine as Chucky’s girlfriend.
This movie moves away from Andy and focuses much more on the character of Chucky, which is a great choice. The two human characters we follow don’t really have an interesting storyline or character development, but that doesn’t matter – they are there as tools for Chucky and Tiffany’s plot.
The introduction to Tiffany was fantastic, cementing her as a worthy equal to Chucky. They bicker and fight in hilarious and often violent ways, often making comedic digs at relationships in general which are surprisingly relatable at times!
The reason I haven’t given this movie 4 instead of 3 stars is that despite it being a fun joyride with Chucky and Tiffany, I do think we need a main character like Andy or Kyle for him to go up against. And like I said before, the two we have in this movie just aren’t that great.
Another negative of this movie is that it spawned something that is directly responsible for the travesty that is the next movie, Seed of Chucky (2004)…
Overall, Bride of Chucky is a fantastic movie with so many great moments; we get some iconic lines, some inventive kills, and the fantastic introduction of Tiffany Valentine.
