Fantasy and Sci-Fi Book Series to Continue in 2023 - The Fantasy Review

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Book Series to Continue in 2023

Over the last few years I have begun a lot of book series, so there are many fantasy and sci-fi book series to continue in 2023 and beyond. I might not finish all of these in a year (with a 6 month-old baby I definitely won’t!) but I’ll give it my best go.

Anyway, here is a list of all the fantasy and sci-fi book series to continue in 2023.

The First Law & Shattered Sea Trilogies by Joe Abercrombie

fantasy and sci-fi books to continue 2023

I read book 1 in The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie this year and loved it – check out my review for The Blade Itself here.

The First Law is definitely something I am taking my time with, as I have heard so many reviewers say they wish they could start from the beginning again with no knowledge of what’s to come. That being said, I aim to read both books 2 and 3 in 2023, and then move onto the 3 standalones and next trilogy based in the same world soon after.

I read Half a King a while ago, and while I enjoyed it, for some reason I have not gotten back around to the Shattered Sea trilogy yet. I would like to try and read at least book 2 some time soon, but it’s not super high on my list of fantasy and sci-fi books to continue in 2023.

Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov

fantasy and sci-fi books to continue 2023

Another series I started a while ago is the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. I loved Foundation and Foundation and Empire but I never got around to reading book 3, Second Foundation. I tried the TV series done by Apple and it wasn’t great, and I miss this fantastic series.

I should at least finish the main trilogy!

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

fantasy and sci-fi books to continue

Here is a series that is in the top 5 of my fantasy and sci-fi books to continue in 2023. I have now read Gardens of the Moon 3 times and am halfway through a reread of Deadhouse Gates. My aim is to keep going until I get to where I paused last time with the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which is book 4, House of Chains.

Steven Erikson is a fantastic author and this world is one I want to learn more and more about, experiencing as much of it as possible.

Dune by Frank Herbert

fantasy and sci-fi books to continue 2023

I started Dune by Frank Herbert last Christmas, got 40% through it and then paused – it has now almost been exactly 1 year since then! I loved the film that came out in 2021 and would like to finish reading the book before part 2 comes out – which I believe has finished filming.

Lawful Times by Daniel B. Greene

Breach of Peace was a great debut novella from Daniel Greene. I enjoyed it and would like to read the sequel soon, but I got distracted! I have just finished the most recent book inThe Dresden Files, which is book 17, Battle Ground, so I feel like I have a little more time for the slimmer books that break up these large, epic fantasy series!

The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne

I need to reread Malice before I continue with The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. I loved the first book and got over halfway through book 2, Valour, but life got in the way and now I have forgotten too much just to dive back in where I left off.

It’s definitely a priority though! Like Joe Abercrombie, John Gwynne is an author I want to read everything from, because all the books sound amazing and I am yet to hear negative reviews from people I trust!

Hannibal Lecter Series by Thomas Harris

I finished reading Red Dragon last Christmas and loved it! I am yet to write a review but it will definitely be 5 stars. I am currently reading The Silence of the Lambs and really enjoying it, so this is a series of books I will certainly be continuing, if not finishing in 2023.

Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

Assassin's Apprentice Book Review

Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb was such a harrowing read, I think I felt like I just didn’t want to go through any more pain! So, it has been over a year, maybe 2 since I finished it.

However, it was a fantastic read, and I hear so many good things, not only about the first trilogy, but about the following series within the Realm of the Elderlings – so I better get to it!

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

fantasy and sci-fi books to continue 2023

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan is on this list, but I actually haven’t decided if I will continue with it yet. I enjoyed every book I have read so far (up to book 5, The Fires of Heaven) but I’ve been struggling to motivate myself to continue.

I will continue to consider it though, because I did enjoy the first 4 books – and in January this year I reread books 1-3 in a row, enjoying them even more.

The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn Era 2 by Brandon Sanderson

The Way of Kings Book Review

Finally on this list of fantasy and sci-fi books to continue in 2023 is catching up with Brandon Sanderson‘s latest entries into The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn (Era 2).

I am yet to read Rhythm of War and The Lost Metal, despite preordering them both! I will definitely be catching up in 2023 as I love the Cosmere and can’t wait to find out more about it.
